Robert Langevin | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Robert Langevin is one of the most sought after flutists in the world and appears in many solo and orchestral performances. He is principal flute with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and even served concurrently with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Robert Langevin is one of North America’s strongest links to the French School with his tonal concepts and performance style. As a member of Musica Camerata Montreal and l'Ensemble de la Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec, he helped premiere many works, including the Canadian premiere of Pierre Boulez's Le Marteau sans maître. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, he became a student of Jean-Paul Major and graduated from the Montreal Conservatory in 1976 with the 1st Prize in Flute and Chamber Music. He later won the National Prix d’Europe a competition between all instrumentalists. This prize enabled him to study abroad for 2 years with Aurele Nicolet at Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Later, 1979 he went to Geneva, Switzerland, where he studied with Maxence Larrieu and subsequently won the 2nd Prize in the Budapest International Competition in 1980; after which he returned to Canada and joined the Montreal Symphony as associate principal. Mr. Langevin is currently on the faculties of The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and the Orford International Summer Festival. |

Camille Churchfield | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Camille Churchfield served
as Principal Flute of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for the past 29
years. She recently joined the flute faculty at the University of Ottawa
and now performs as Guest Principal with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Camille performed as concerto soloist in Vancouver, the Seattle Symphony
and toured with the Toronto Symphony. Her creative musicianship and luminous
tone have earned the respect of audiences across the country. In much
demand as a chamber musician, she has performed in Vancouver, the Scotia
Festival, and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Ms. Churchfield
has often been heard on CBC Radio, recorded with the VSO as well as with
her husband, bassoonist Christopher Millard (Summit Records). Her training
includes study with the preeminent British flutist William Bennett, Paul
Renzi, and Roger Stevens. She has been on faculty at the University of
British Columbia, Domaine Forget, and the National Youth Orchestra of

Joanna G’froerer |

One of Canada's best known flutists, Joanna G’froerer is principal flutist with Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. She has performed as soloist with the CBC Radio Orchestra, Symphony Orchestras in Vancouver, Victoria, Kingston, Quebec and Montreal. Her chamber music recordings include “Forgotten Dreams” with “Thirteen Strings”, Mozart Flute Quartets on CBC Records and she was invited to record an all Rodrigo disc with Maestro Maximiano Valdes. Joanna has been a guest artist at the Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa Chamber Music Festivals and also performed with the Proteus Ensemble of Montreal, and the Penderecki, and Tokyo String Quartets. She has taught at the Scotia Festival of Music, and given masterclasseses at numerous Canadian and American schools. Joanna currently teaches at the University of Ottawa. She earned a Licentiate in Music from McGill in 1993 studying with flutist, Timothy Hutchins. |

Stéphane Lemelin regularly performs
as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada and abroad. A recipient of
several national and international awards, and prize-winner of the Robert
Casadeus International Competition in Cleveland, he studied with Yvonne
Hubert, Karl-Ulrich Schnabel, Leon Fleisher, Boris Berman and Claude
Frank, and holds a doctorate from Yale University. His repertory is vast,
with a predilection for Romantic and especially French music, as manifested
by his recordings. Among his fifteen recordings are the complete Nocturnes
of Fauré, works by Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Roussel, but also works by lesser-known
composers such as Gustave Samazeuilh and Guy Ropartz. Stéphane
Lemelin is a professor at the University of Ottawa, a member of Trio
Hochelaga, and Artistic Director of an annual chamber music festival
in Ontario, the Prince Edward County Music Festival. |

Christopher Millard |

Christopher Millard is principal bassoon of the National Arts Centre Orchestra after serving as principal with the Vancouver Symphony and the CBC Radio Orchestras for 28 years. A regular guest artist and teacher at the Scotia, Orford and Ottawa Festivals, the Domaine Forget in Quebec and the Banff Centre, he has also appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Marlboro Festival, the World Orchestra for Peace, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. His four solo recordings include a disc in the “OrchestraPro” series and a disc of Italian concerti with Mario Bernardi and the CBC Radio Orchestra. He is a member of the acclaimed Caliban Bassoon Quartet. Recently he recorded a new Schubert Octet and won a Juno for the Hétu Bassoon Concerto. He studied with Sol Schoenbach at the Curtis Institute. He has been on faculty with the University of British Columbia and the National Youth Orchestra for 20 years. The program will include:

Jean Desmarais is an extraordinarily
versatile pianist in constant demand as a soloist, a chamber musician and
in the remarkably challenging role as an accompanist. He earned his Masters
degree and Premier Prix in Piano and Chamber Music in Montreal and continued
his studies in Paris and Berlin. Jean has been a member of the new Canadian
music Pierrot Ensemble and played with Quatuor Arthur-Leblanc. Jean has
performed in Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Poland, Switzerland
and the USA. He has collaborated with Kiri Te Kanawa, Ben Heppner, Robert
Cram, Timothy Hutchins, Alain Trudel, Isabelle Lacroix, Denis Lawlor, Jasper
Wood, Denise Djokic, Mark Fewer, Charles Hamman, Joanna G’Froerer, Stéphane
Lévesque, Kimball Sykes, Amanda Forsyth, and Pinchas Zukerman. In May 2005 he performed the Schumann piano concerto
with Orchestre Philharmonique du Nouveau Monde and recently performed the
Schubert cycle Die Winterreise with baritone Denis Lawlor. Jean Desmarais
has been on the faculty at the National Arts Centre Young Artists Programme
and Young Conductors Programme, the University of Ottawa, Carleton University,
and the International Music Academy of Nice. |

Masterclass with Robert Langevin: Six players have been chosen by audition for half hour sessions. Masterclass with Camille Churchfield: Focus on Mozart. Two players have been chosen by audition. Masterclass with Joanna G'froerer: Focus on Rodrigo. Two players have been chosen by audition.
~ Workshops ~ The theme for the participant's workshops is “Fife and Drum” with everyone getting a chance to play percussion as well as flute in an ensemble setting. This is designed to be an exercise in rhythm, flute technique, ensemble playing and a cathartic experience for all levels and ages of players. There will be four sessions, two workshops on Saturday, a dress rehearsal on Sunday and a grand finale Flute and Percussion Concert on Sunday afternoon!
~ Orchestral Flute Duets ~ Orchestral Flute Duets — This will be a talk and demonstration by Camille Churchfield and Joanna G’froerer based on a book by Jeanne Baxtresser. Duos are welcome to audition to play as in a masterclass format.
~ Brunch with the Stars ~ As a social event, we will be having “Brunch with the Stars,” an informal opportunity to get to know the artists and ask questions. The location for this event is Urbanwells Restaurant, 244 Laurier Ave. East, Ottawa, Ontario.
~ Exhibitor's Hall ~ Shop for flutes, sheet music, CD's, musical paraphernalia. Flute manufacturers will be present and you can try out some flutes. The exhibitors will be:
